How to properly launch the services on a dedicated server ?

FTP (port 21)
Ftp is managed by ncftpd: www.ncftpd.com

  • To disable the service:
You need to edit /etc/inittab (check if it includes the line about ncftpd) and restart init

# pico /etc/inittab
#/sbin/init q


  • To restart the service:
It's sufficient to kill all the processes. ncftpd will be started automatically.

# killall -9 ncftpd


SSH (port 22)
If your ssh doesn't work, you need to enable telnet or use webmin.

Ssh is managed by openssh: www.openssh.com

  • To disable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/ssh stop



  • To restart the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/ssh start


Telnet (port 23)
Telnet is managed by xinetd. You need to edit the configuration file for telnet, and restart xinetd. The option in xinetd works the other way, you need to choose no, to activate the service.

# pico /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
#/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart


  • To enable the service:

# pico /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart


Smtp (port 25)
Smtp is managed by qmail : www.qmail.org
Script operates also on pop3 server.

  • To disable the service:

# cd /
#/etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail stop


  • To enable the service:

# cd /
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail start


DNS (port 53)
DNS is managed by bind: www.isc.org/products/BIND/

  • To disable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/named stop


  • To enable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/named start


Web (port 80)
Web is managed by Apache: httpd.apache.org

  • To disable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd stop


  • To enable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start


POP3 (port 110)
POP3 is managed by qmail: www.qmail.org

Script operates also on SMTP.

  • To disable the service:

# cd /
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail stop


  • To enable the service:

# cd /
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail start



IMAP (port 143)
IMAP is managed by courier-imap: www.inter7.com/

  • To disable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/imapd stop


  • To enable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/imapd start


MySQL (port 3306)
MySQL is managed by mysql: www.mysql.com

  • To disable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql stop


  • To enable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start


Webmin (port 10000)

Webmin is managed by webmin: www.webmin.com

  • To disable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/webmin stop


  • To enable the service:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/webmin start
